    Downgrade to cdrtools-2.01.01.67-i686-001.tgz from BLS 1.3.001. I am unable to compile a new version that has a working cdrecord with our current toolchain/kernel combination. The author of cdrtools is infamous for being hard to work with and having his own (broken everywhere but his own machine) build system. Once you have used mkisofs to generate your filesystem, use xorriso to burn it to optical media. I did try versions 71, 72, and 73 but they all give errors and say the kernel headers are broken, which is bogus since nothing but this one program has any problems with the ext2 headers. Even the old version would not rebuild, thus we use the binary from an old CD. I will resolve this issue before release (by finding an alternative mkisofs, or building cdrtools without cdrecord).
  • Add xorriso-0.4.8_00-i686-001.tgz; this is added because cdrtools no longer will build a working burner program. You use the mkisofs from cdrtools, then to this:
    

    xorriso -as cdrecord -v -dev=/dev/sr0 whatever.iso
    

    Note that you must use the eject command to eject the disc so you clear the kernel status for the drive.
  • Massive updates to initramfs images. Now we use mdev to populate /dev, and we have (limited) hotplug support. This should fix firmware loading for the awful broadcom NICs in the rack-mount hardware. However, since I don't have access to any big server machines for testing, I have not been able to verify that yet. Also, the timezone bugs should be fixed. Also, the thumbdrive initramfs changes have been merged.
  • R moved off of the DVD. This has no users, and the DVD image is too large to fit on a DVD.

  • Fixes to initramfs images. You can now use a USB stick instead of a CDROM to install with for servers. Here is a step-by-step guide and I assume your USB drive is /dev/sdb and your iso image is bls1.3.002beta1_cdrom.iso. Insert your USB stick. If it automounts, umount it. Then do:
    

    dd if=bls1.3.002beta1_cdrom.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=1M
    

    To install from that drive, plug it in when the power is off, and power up the machine. If the BIOS supports USB booting, you will then be able to install BLS from the USB stick. For the CDROM you need at least a 1GB USB stick. For the DVD, you need at least an 8GB USB stick. It works on DELL OptiPlex machines, but that's all I have for testing.

First, the rc.netmaster would complain about Dell, but the problem is Broadcom (IBM x series servers also use that brain-damaged NIC chipset). I added a longer message explaining the issue and did not mention Dell or IBM. Second, the servsetup said that port 80 and 443 are for apache; they are for web servers, and today in BLS that is nginx or lighttpd, not apache. So changed it to say web server instead.

    The BLS package with the latest upgrade to mysql failed to restore some databases for users with very large numbers and sizes of databases.   • Upgrade to mysql_scripts-1.1-noarch-003.tgz; Kanjana reported that the mdbrestore failed, and when she root-caused the problem in testing it turns out that max_allowed_packet was set too low. Now I explicitely set it to 128M in the scripts.
  • You should apply the changes in the my.cnf.patch. If you have a default BLS configuration and have mysql-5.1.43-i686-001 installed, you can follow the simple instructions given here. If you have a customized configuation, you will have to read the patch and merge the changes by hand instead of using the patch command as shown in the commands below.

    Shutdown any running web server, then do this as root:

  • Thumbdrive version is released. This was tested using 8GB thumbdrives from Apacer and Kingston. It works for recent Gigabyte motherboards, and for Dell desktop machines. Since there is no real BIOS standard, there is no way that I know of to build an image that works on every machine. Since everything at the university is a Dell Optiplex 330 or GX520, and it works on those, I have decided to release it. This version writes on the thumbdrive heavily, so be sure you buy something with a lifetime warranty and realize you probably will have to replace it every 6 months if you use it daily. Also, as USB is slow, BLS on USB is slow when accessing the disk, and of course storage is quite limited. Otherwise, however, you get a 'full' BLS 1.3.002 server mode installation, with a few custom tweaks to make it work better on the thumbdrive. It is setup for DHCP networking, but if you have a mouse you need to run blsmouseconfig and then start the /etc/rc.d/rc.gpm manually. The /tmp is a ramdisk, but everything else is permanently stored (your ${HOME}, etc.).

    This version of the kernel drops all support for the old IDE drivers, and uses the new generation libata PATA drivers instead. If you have any /dev/hdXX in your /etc/fstab, you will have to change it to be /dev/sdXX instead. If you have have a CDROM or DVD drive, you need to change it from /dev/hdc (or whatever it is) to /dev/sr0 instead. Finally, you need to update your /boot/extlinux.conf to use /dev/sda1 instead of /dev/hda1 for the 'root=' lines. You have to make these changes before you reboot.
