Bugs
This is the Burapha Linux Server bug list. Here I list the bugs I
know about, and some information about each one. To submit
a new bug, you can
contact me and I will
verify it and if it really is a bug I will add it to the list.
==========================[ KNOWN BUGS ]==================================
Sat Dec 26 02:50:11 ICT 2009
[C] - critical should be fixed before a new release
[A] - annoying workaround exists, but the problem is annoying
[B] - bug any bug that is not [C] or [A]
1. php-cgi zombies are sometimes left after restarting lighttpd. [C]
Added: Fri Apr 3 18:49:17 ICT 2009
2. Using dmesg after boot reveals a netfilter problem, as evidenced by
the following messages (timestamps will be different on each machine).
The machine still works though.
--------8< cut here 8<----------
[ 13.058745] ip_tables: (C) 2000-2006 Netfilter Core Team
[ 13.075507] nf_conntrack version 0.5.0 (16384 buckets, 65536 max)
[ 13.075648] CONFIG_NF_CT_ACCT is deprecated and will be removed soon. Plase use
[ 13.075773] nf_conntrack.acct=1 kernel paramater, acct=1 nf_conntrack module option or
[ 13.075898] sysctl net.netfilter.nf_conntrack_acct=1 to enable it.
--------8< cut here 8<----------
Added: Thu Jan 15 15:25:27 ICT 2009 [A]
In fact, if you manually turn the option off, then run the
recommended 'make oldconfig' it gets turned back on. This is
a kernel bug, not a BLS bug.
Updated: Sat Jan 24 10:56:27 ICT 2009
3. Firefox3 address bar does not update if you ever type in it.
The workaround is to highlight the text in the bar and press the
Esc key. This is a bug in firefox, but I haven't found a patch
for it yet. The awesome bar really is a P.O.S. [A]
Added: Sat Mar 7 10:32:31 ICT 2009
4. mrouted will give messages like this to the console often if
you run it:
ioctl32(mrouted:3292): Unknown cmd fd(5) cmd(000089e1){t:ffffff89;sz:0} arg(fff23ba8) on socket: [####]
[A]
Added: Thu Jun 11 14:20:20 ICT 2009
5. Today I try to stop radius service. I run freeradius_server-2.1.3-i586-004.
It said:
BLS #/etc/rc.d/rc.radiusd (rc.radiusd) args="stop"
BLS #./rc.radiusd: line 237: kill: (6600) - No such process
ERROR(rc.radiusd): Could not kill /usr/sbin/radiusd
ERROR(rc.radiusd): EXITCODE=1
BLS #ps -ef | grep radiusd
root 3088 1 0 Jul20 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/radiusd
BLS #
You told me fix pid in /var/run/pid and to send in a bug report. [A]
Added: Tue Jul 21 16:23:00 ICT 2009
Reported by: Kanjana Eiamsaard
6. Attempting to use radwho as a normal user results in this:
BLS $radwho
Thu Jul 23 23:21:11 2009 : Error: Unable to open file
"/etc/raddb/proxy.conf": Permission denied
radwho: Error reading radiusd.conf. [A]
Added: Mon Jul 27 02:18:29 ICT 2009
Reported by: John Ham
7. Upgrading bluez (and some other packages) results in messages like this:
udevd[1385]: specified group 'dialout' unknown [A]
Added: Sat Nov 7 10:16:41 ICT 2009
Reported by: Kanjana Eiamsaard
8. rc.netmaster2 seems to hang on stop if
1) you change the hostname
2) you do not change /etc/mail/local-host-names to match
3) you use fail2ban
4) you have no working DNS, but are configured to use DNS anyway
Why?
fail2ban tries to send email, but email won't go because since the
hostname is not a local-host-names entry, it wants to use DNS. You have
to wait for the DNS timeouts (minutes). Then finally netmaster2 does not
crash, but people give up. [A]
Correct solution: working DNS, statip IP in forward & reverse DNS, working
email setup. However, we need a workaround for the unfortunate...

============================[ UNBUGS ]====================================
When: Sat Sep 1, 2007
What: chmod busted?
Given this (Sat, 1 Sep 2007 15:18:17 +0700 (ICT))::
ls -ld joe
drwx--S--- 2 zappaman zappaman 4096 Sep 1 15:16 joe
chmod 00755 should fix it, but does not. Why? I get
this result:
drwxr-sr-x 2 zappaman zappaman 4096 Sep 1 15:16 joe
REJECTED:
This is a limitation of the program and is documented in the man page.
use this instead:
chmod u=rwx,go=rx joe
When: Mon Feb 12, 2007
What: pcimodules lists 8139cp but should not
REJECTED:
On the linux lab boxes the pcimodules command lists 8139cp and
8139too drivers, but the 8139cp driver is invalid for those machines
(and you get a message in the logs to that effect when the load
is attempted). This is a problem upstream; pcimodules is broken.
The pcimodules program is not supported, and no workaround is known
at this time. So this is a bug, but it is not a bug in BLS.
When: January, 2007
What: Changing hostname while in X makes X unusable
REJECTED:
After much research I have learned that this is an inherent limit of the
aging X windows sytem's xauth and iceauth security code. So this is
a bug, but it is not a bug in BLS. It is a design flaw in the X windows
sytem. Keep in mind X windows was designed more than 20 years ago before
DHCP even existed, and back when every machine on earth could easily have
its own static hostname and IP for the entire service life of the machine.
These assumptions seem silly today, and let's hope the new Xorg development
will find a way to remove this wart from their security model soon.
When: Mon Apr 9 01:42:38 ICT 2007
What:bochs does not work
REJECTED:
The bochs developers refuse to support any gcc 4.x compiler. The
gcc developers refuse to support any gcc 3.x compiler. BLS needs
gcc more than it needs bochs, so the bochs package was dropped.
If they ever get it working well enough to work with our current
compiler I will add it back. So this is a bug, but it is not a bug
in BLS.
When: Wed Feb 14 14:11:41 ICT 2007
Who:Pakamas Thapparos
What:inet can be disabled with servsetup
REJECTED:
If you really don't want any of the services like auth, you should
be permitted to turn of inetd. Granted it would be unusual, but
if you don't run email you could turn it off.
When: Thu May 4 14:26:14 ICT 2006
Who:Unknown Soldier
What:My CMI9739 sound chip is always at maximum volume.
REJECTED:
This is the result of a hardware design error. See the BLS FAQ
for information on how to work around it with custom ALSA configuration
files.
When: Thu Nov 17 10:01:24 ICT 2005
Who:Unknown Soldier
What:RealPlayer will not run on BLS
REJECTED:
This is a bug in RealPlayer, not BLS. The code is closed source
and they ship a binary only package. It requires some antique libraries
which are no longer part of any modern GNU libc. This is a good example
of why you should never use closed source binary applications. So this
is a bug, but it is not a bug in BLS. RealPlayer needs to release the
source code with an open source license and then we can compile it to
run on our system.
When:Mon Oct 10 01:59:32 ICT 2005
Who:Unknown Soldier
What:On the initrd grep is /sbin/grep, but it is /bin/grep once installed.
REJECTED:
This is not a real bug. As long as your package's install/* and
var/log/setup/* do not specify a full path to grep things work fine.
When: Unknown
Who: Unknown Soldier
What: mount is broken
REJECTED:
This is not a major bug.
If I boot with rescue mode I do this:
mount -t proc /proc /proc
mount -o rw,remount /dev/hda1 /
and then I get a 'Segmentation Fault' message. This is a bug in mount.
Workaround: Use the -n option.
mount -n -o rw,remount /
cd /etc
rm mtab
ln -s /proc/mounts mtab
So this is a bug, but it is not a bug in BLS.
When: Wed Apr 18 14:38:25 ICT 2007
Who: John Ham
What: DHCP locks up
REJECTED:
If root does something stupid, so will BLS.
When booting up having networking configured for DHCP, if the DHCP connection
does not work (in my case by changing network cards but forgetting to run
netmaster to update the system) the system hangs forever waiting. It should
have a timeout after which it gives up. Strangely, if the correct network card
driver is used, the timeout mechanism works, but if the wrong network card
driver is used, the system hangs forever. This is not critical since if you
change hardware and forget to reconfigure, that is an administration error.
[NOTE: This used to be listed as a bug, but really it is user error. The
root user must do the right thing or be prepared to fix it in
single user mode.]
When: Thu Feb 26 16:34:48 ICT 2009
Who: John Ham
What: Shutdown sometimes fails
REJECTED:
Somebody stole my server, so the problem no longer exists for me. Let's hope
the thief rots in Hell for all eternity.
